The Canada jay, aka the grey jay/gray jay/camp robber/Perisoreus canadensis/Mésangeai du Canada (whew!), is Canada’s national bird. The other aka is whiskey jack and it’s the only bird in Canada commonly referred to by its (anglicized) traditional Indigenous name - Cree wîskicahk.

These fluffy birds are various shades of dark and light grey, and can appear tinted blue when they catch the light off the snow. Their preferred habitat is Canada’s boreal and mountain forests, and they’re tough and probably crazy because they stay here year round (nesting in -30 C / -22 F). Despite their winter life choices, Grey jays are members of the corvid family and are amongst the smartest birds in the world. Combine their intelligence with an impressive memory and a mischievous, inquisitive, and bold nature, and one could say they are highly spirited.
